Laser Facials Q&A

What is the difference between a laser facial and IPL?

A laser facial is a non-invasive procedure that uses a short pulse YAG laser to gently heat up different areas of the skin. It is a delicate, rejuvenating treatment that uses precise, pulsing motions beneficial for your skin. This procedure is safe for most skin types. It helps stimulate collagen production, reduces fine lines, minimizes pore sizes, and results in dewy, rested, and glowing skin.

Intense pulsed light (IPL) is a more intense facial procedure that uses cosmetic light therapy to improve the aesthetic appearance of your skin. The pigment in your skin absorbs the IPL’s energy and converts it to heat. The heat damages the excess pigment in your skin, minimizing imperfections. While also stimulating collagen production, IPL can also treat the following:

  • Age spots
  • Sun damage
  • Freckles
  • Spider veins
  • Rosacea
  • Scars
  • Acne
  • Broken capillaries

Am I a candidate for laser facials or IPL?

Most individuals are good candidates for regular laser facials; however, since the IPL is attracted to pigmentation, this procedure is not suitable for all skin types. In either case, it is best to schedule a consultation with one of the technicians at Sierra Nevada Wellness Center so you can receive a physical and medical history examination and go over the expectations, results, and possible downtime of either procedure and run test spots if needed.

In the two weeks before your laser facial, the team might ask you to avoid certain activities and medications, including specific skin care products, sun exposure, and tanning. It’s critical to follow their instructions carefully to achieve the best possible results from treatment.

Are laser facials safe?

Laser facials are safe, and there is not usually any downtime. For IPL treatments, while it does not occur with all individuals, some individuals may experience mild bruising, swelling, scabbing, and redness. This is normal. However, downtime varies among each client and will be dependent upon the amount of damage that has occurred to the skin over the years. In either case, your technician at Sierra Nevada Wellness Center will discuss aftercare instructions with you.
