Women's Health Q&A

What is women’s health?

Women’s health is a medical specialty that diagnoses, treats, and prevents certain health problems in women. Though men and women develop many of the same diseases, their unique reproductive systems put them at risk for gender-specific issues.

Visiting Sierra Nevada Wellness Center for routine women’s health check-ups can prolong your life, help you avoid potentially serious health problems, and enhance your well-being.

What services does women’s health offer?

At Sierra Nevada Wellness Center, the team offers various women’s health services, including:

Pap smears

A Pap smear is a preventive screening measure that determines your risk of cervical cancer. During a Pap smear, your doctor uses a thin cotton swab to collect a sample of cells from your cervix. Afterward, they send your selection to a laboratory that analyzes it for the presence of cancerous or precancerous cells.

Birth control

If you’re sexually active but don’t want to have children, consider birth control. There are several types of birth control, including oral contraceptives, patches, and implantable options like intrauterine devices (IUDs). Following an exam and review of your health history, the team can make recommendations that align with your needs.

STD testing

If you’re sexually active with multiple partners, you’re also more likely to develop a sexually transmitted disease (STD). Chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis don’t always present symptoms early on. Routine testing can alert you and prevent the spreading of infections to others.

Menopause care

Menopause is a normal part of a woman’s aging process, but it often presents uncomfortable symptoms. If you’re struggling to manage hot flashes, vaginal dryness, and frequent mood swings, you might benefit from hormone replacement therapy or another type of treatment.

Thermal Breast Scan

Thermal Breast Scans are an adjunctive screening technology that records a thermal (heat) signature unique for each individual scanned. Thermal Breast Scans are FDA cleared and screen breast health in women and/or men.

The heat pattern images in the breast tissue are recorded by an infrared thermal camera. The entire scan is performed in 6-7 minutes. Your scan images and data are provided to a laboratory for the results to be analyzed. The scan results will take approximately 48-72 business hours and will be sent to your physician, who will then evaluate your breast health.

Your Sierra Nevada Wellness Center provider may recommend a thermal breast scan as adjunctive to other breast imaging examinations or as part of an annual exam.

Thermal breast scans have several benefits, including:

  • They are quick
  • They are painless
  • They are safe – they do not emit radiation
  • They do not come in contact with your body or compress your breast tissue
  • Can detect abnormalities as small as 2mm (Mammography usually detects as small as 12-16mm) potentially detecting signs of abnormalities 7-10 years sooner

When should I schedule a women’s health exam?

The team at Sierra Nevada Wellness Center recommends you schedule a women’s health exam at least once a year. That’s especially true if you’re 40 or older.

The natural aging process increases your risk of potentially serious health problems, including heart disease, high blood pressure, and certain types of cancer. Routine check-ups can catch these and other issues early while they’re most likely to respond to treatment.

Don’t wait to request a women’s health exam at Sierra Nevada Wellness Center. Call the office or book an appointment online today.
